Marc Costanzo wrote "Steal My Sunshine" while standing 1,000 feet from the stage at an outdoor electronic music festival, writing parts of the song on his leg and parts on a napkin. The disco loop at the center of the track was a recording Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene played at a house party, which Costanzo sampled the following morning. The master recording sat under Costanzo's bed collecting dust until the day the band had to hand it in for mixing. After the song's unexpected success, they planned a 200-show U.S. tour. They quit after 80 dates and drove the tour bus home.

In our deep dive into Steal My Sunshine, we trace the song from a napkin at a rave to a dust-covered tape to the tour the band abandoned halfway through, and what it reveals about an artist who wasn't interested in what fame actually looked like up close.
